See detailed feeding guide in the product photos above.

Storage Instructions

Store in the freezer, thaw one day before feeding in the refrigerator. Once opened, store the leftovers in the original packaging or in a food safe container in the fridge.

If food is still cold to touch at meal time, it is optional to leave it out at room temperature or heat it up in your microwave before feeding. Or try both ways to see what your pup loves most!

Once opened, consume within 5 days.

Transition Guide

Transition slowly over a period of 10 days, and especially slow if your dog is not used to fresh foods.

Day 1-3: Replace current food with 25% of Root & Tail food

Day 4-6: Increase to 50-75% of Root & Tail food

Day 7-10: Increase to 75% and completely replace current food at the end.

If at anytime during the transition, your dog experiences loose or soft stool, go back to the previous stage for 2 more days.

Our senior dog Pepper has never been a big 'foodie' and she's gotten fussier with age, so finding food she will consistently eat has been a struggle. She loves Root & Tail and licks her bowl clean -  we're so happy to have another option of Pepper-approved foods!

FAQ

Find the most frequently asked questions below.
  • Most recipes are considered High Protein at 30+ % protein on a Dry Matter Basis. Considering that our recipe is a freshly cooked food, if you take away the moisture and compare it on a Dry Matter Basis, this recipe is at 43% in Protein. That is higher than most recipes you find in the market, including raw and meat based diets.

  • Protein in this recipe comes from multiple sources, notably Chickpeas, Lentil, Pea Protein, Oyster Mushroom Protein.

  • Yes! Dogs are omnivores, not carnivores, and although they evolved eating a diet including animals, the diet of many wild canines included a large proportions of plants.

What's important is that their diet provides all the essential nutrients, including protein, and total protein requirements can be met with a number of different plant protein sources. In this recipe, the protein mainly comes from chickpeas, lentils, peas, and oyster mushrooms.

There are multiple health benefits of plant-based proteins:

    • Lower in fat than animal proteins, especially saturated fats
    • Higher in gut-supporting fibre than animal proteins
    • Provide additional beneficial compounds like beta-glucans, antioxidants and other health-promoting phytonutrients
  • Don't take our words for it, ask your vet or a vet nutritionist! The fact is that plant-based kibbles are very common for dogs with sensitivities and allergies (vets prescribe them to dogs with allergies all the time), because plant-based diets help lower the chance of food allergic reactions.

  • Though not definitive evidence, studies have also determined that owners of dogs fed plant-based diets report better health and longer lives (up to 18 months) than dogs fed conventional meat-based diets. We will be sharing more about this exciting research in our blog!
